Audi predicted to enter next Formula E season

Audi is predicted to enter its own Formula E team in the 2017/18 season, going up against fellow passenger car manufacturers DS, Jaguar and Renault in the all-electric series.

Audi currently has a large amount of involvement with the ABT Schaeffler team, but the German car maker claims to be “using the 2016/17 season to learn more about” the race series, while also preparing for what it calls “fully factory-backed commitment” in 2017/18.

The 2016/17 kicks off this weekend in Hong Kong, with Audi supporting the ABT team. It will be using its experience in DTM (German touring cars) and World Endurance Championship to aid the ABT team.

Dr. Wolfgang Ullrich, Audi Motorsport boss, said: “Similar to the DTM, the Formula E race cars are homologated and cannot be altered during the season.

“At the same time, the software, which is so crucial to energy management in Formula E, can be constantly worked on. In this field, we have lots of experience from the FIA World Endurance Championship which we can use to support the team.”

The move is due to be coordinated by former Le Mans racer Allan McNish, who has “provisionally assumed responsibility.”
