BMW unveil M4 DTM Champion Edition

BMW has taken the wraps off its limited-run M4 DTM Champion Edition in the wake of BMW Motorsport Works driver Marco Wittmann’s DTM championship title.

The car will be limited to just 200 units, and will cost €148,500 (£134,136).

Despite being based on the standard M4, the DTM Champion Edition brings with it some significant changes. The car’s turbocharged straight-six engine produces 493bhp – 68bhp more than the standard car – while torque has been increased from 550Nm to 600Nm.

Given these high outputs, it will come as no surprise that the DTM Champion Edition is fast, able to reach 62mph in just 3.8 seconds, and carry on accelerating to a top speed of 190mph. Contrasting this is a claimed combined economy figure of 33.2mpg. CO2 emissions sit at 199g/km.

Similar in some ways to the M4 GTS, the DTM Champion Edition uses water injection technology, which helps to keep the car’s combustion chambers cool.

Many panels use lightweight materials, keeping the car’s overall weight lower. The bonnet, roof and rear diffuser have all been made from carbon-fibre-reinforced plastic.

Carbon-ceramic brakes have also been used to provide excellent stopping performance, with the car’s wheels sitting on Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tyres, which give the DTM Champion Edition excellent cornering capabilities.

Frank van Meel, president of BMW M GmbH, said: “Congratulations to Marco Wittmann, his team RMG and the entire crew from BMW Motorsport.

“We have the pleasure of honouring Marco’s performance by producing a BMW M4 DTM Champion Edition in 2016 to mark his winning the DTM drivers’ title. Never before has one of our edition models been so closely linked to motor racing.”
