Holidaymakers in the UK are now preferring to get behind the wheel in order to reach their destinations rather than use planes, trains or buses, a survey has shown.

Conducted by breakdown cover provider Green Flag, the research has revealed that of the 1,000 people asked, 56 per cent were choosing to drive their own car instead of taking public transport.

The survey also showed that while package holiday prices have remained low, many sun-seekers were preferring driving holidays – with 46 per cent of those asked admitting that they went on more road trips than they did 10 years ago.

Simon Henrick, from Green Flag, said: “Our research has shown that Brits are enjoying hitting the road for many reasons. The spontaneity and freedom of having a car enables holidaymakers to travel wherever, whenever; being able to see the country in a new way, whilst saving money on travel and being able to spend quality family time.

“People have also said that they enjoy travelling by car because it allows them to stop off at multiple places along the way.”

Location preferences had also changed, with 70 per cent of those in the survey saying that they would be taking a break in the UK this summer, rather than travel abroad.

This admission represents a large increase over the figure that was taken five years ago, which saw 20 per cent of people admitting that they would be staying in the UK rather than going overseas.
