A fully-functioning electric car aimed at children between the ages of five and ten has just been released in the UK.

Called the Firefly, the two-seater vehicle made by Young Driver Motor Cars Limited has been designed to offer young children a way of learning to drive.

It is powered by two electric motors and can reach a restricted top speed of 10mph. It handles like a real car, and has a state-of-the-art safety system that can detect obstacles, bringing the car to a halt.

Kim Stanton, head of Young Driver, said: “We are delighted to be officially launching Young Driver Motor Car’s first electric car aimed at five to 10 year olds – Firefly. It has taken over a year to come together and involved the hard work of many talented and experienced people from the UK’s vibrant and successful automotive industry.

“We were surprised that nothing existed for this age range other than plastic toys, and it felt like we had to take up the challenge and run with it!”

Other features on the new car include a fully adjustable driver’s seat, as well as a ‘Junior’ setting that activates the aforementioned safety system. This also grants adults the ability to stop the car with a remote control at a distance of up to 120 metres.

The public will be able to sign up for lessons in the Firefly in the autumn. Prices for a 20-minute lesson will start at £19.95. Buying the car itself will set you back £5,750 plus VAT.
