Ford Mustang announced as the best-selling sports car in the world for 2016

New figures have shown that the Ford Mustang became the best-selling car in the world in 2016, with 150,000 models sold globally.

The iconic muscle car has been the best-selling sports vehicle in the U.S of fifty years, but thanks to increased popularity in Europe and elsewhere in the world, its sales have increased.

According to a Ford analysis of IHS Markit new vehicle registration data in the sports car segment, the new European-focussed Mustang has helped with sales, after 15,000 orders for the pony car were placed in the region during 2016.

This ensured that it was the best-selling car in France, Sweden, Poland, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Romania, Finland and Greece last year.

Ford attributes the success of its model to the ‘continued global rollout’, which saw ‘big sales gains’ in markets including Germany and China, as well as the car’s introduction to smaller regions such as New Caledonia, Gibraltar and Bonaire.

The Mustang was launched in China in 2015, and success here also played a major role in the car’s overall global presence. Sales increased by 74 per cent in 2015, according to the IHS figures.

The Ford Mustang is now available in 140 countries across all continents other than Antarctica.
