Ford reveals all-new Fiesta ST

Ford has revealed the all-new Fiesta ST ahead of its public debut at next month’s Geneva Motor Show.

The headline performance figure of 197bhp makes it 17bhp more powerful than the previous iteration and on a par with the limited-run ST200 model as standard. The 0-60mph sprint takes 6.5 seconds, 0.2 seconds quicker than before.

The 1.5-litre EcBoost engine keeps some of the green credentials seen elsewhere in the Ford range to keep running costs low. Cylinder deactivation is one of the key contributors to low fuel economy and CO2 emissions of just 114g/km.

Drive modes feature for the first time in a Fiesta ST, giving drivers the choice of normal, sport and track characteristics for different driving situations. Exhaust noise is also increased in the sportier modes.

Ford Performance engineers have worked on the torque vectoring technology that brakes the inside wheel in a corner to improve grip so that it’s more effective than before.

On the outside, unique 18-inch alloy wheels and an ST body kit make the sporty model stand out from the rest of the range, while a Liquid Blue paint job can also be specified. Inside, there are cosseting Recaro seats and a flat-bottomed steering wheel.

Matthias Tonn, Fiesta ST chief programme engineer, said: “Our ST models are designed to make a Ford Performance driving experience accessible to customers regardless of lifestyle”.

With the Fiesta’s move upmarket with its new generation, expect prices to increase over the current car. The entry level ST-1 is £18,145 and we’d expect Ford to keep its new equivalent below £20,000.

The new Ford Fiesta ST goes on sale early next year in both three- and five-door bodystyles.
