Ford reveals new-generation Transit Custom

The latest Transit Custom has been revealed by Ford as it looks to build on its sector dominance.

The new mid-sized van in the Transit range features an all-new interior, as well as an updated exterior design to bring it in line with Ford’s latest passenger cars

The new cabin features hard-wearing materials, 25 litres of space in the instrument panel, two-litre bottle holders and Ford’s Sync 3 infotainment to cope with the demands of users who treat it as a mobile office.

A new Econetic variant of the van has been added to the range. Powered by a Dagenham-built 2.0-litre Ecoblue engine, it produces 104bhp and 148g/km CO2 emissions, and comes with auto stop-start, low rolling resistance tyres and a 62mph speed limiter.

It also features Ford’s Acceleration Control, which adjusts the vehicle’s acceleration depending on the level of load.

All of this means the new Transit Custom is capable of 49.6mpg, which Ford says is a six per cent improvement over the most efficient version of the current model.

Hans Schep, general manager of commercial vehicles for Ford of Europe, said: “Transit Custom has been a runaway success since it was introduced, and this new version raises the game once more. We have listened carefully to our customers and delivered a one-tonne van that is even more stylish, even more productive and packed with smart features.”

Ford is yet to confirm when orders can be placed but first deliveries are scheduled for early 2018.  The manufacturer is hoping it will continue the success of the outgoing model, which was the UK’s top-selling commercial vehicle in 2016, selling more than 50,000 units.
