Ford unveils facelifted Mustang

Ford has revealed the facelifted Mustang in Los Angeles ahead of its arrival in US showrooms this autumn.

Featuring a new grille and a revised tail, the manufacturer says the newcomer provides a “leaner and meaner look and refined aerodynamics”.

Under the bonnet, the flagship 5.0-litre V8 has been updated to become more powerful and freer-revving than any other Mustang GT. With a new direct injection system and supplementary low-pressure port injection, the GT is now more efficient and more powerful.

Ford’s four-cylinder 2.3-litre EcoBoost engine has also been tweaked, with an overboost function calibrated to deliver even more torque.

Every version of the new Mustang, meanwhile, gets new shock absorbers that Ford claim improve the ride, while lateral stiffness has been increased with the addition of a new joint in the suspension. Uprated stabiliser bars round out the suspension tweaks, sharpening the handling.

As an option, 2018 Mustang customers will be able to specify the MagneRide damper technology offered as part of the Mustang Performance Package, as well as the active valve exhaust system.

Both 2.3-litre and V8-powered Mustangs will available with a 10-speed automatic gearbox, while the manual gearboxes have been uprated to improve torque delivery.

The new Mustang is expected to arrive in the UK towards the beginning of 2018.
