Lexus to debut new LS saloon at Detroit show

Lexus will reveal its new LS flagship saloon at next month’s Detroit motor show.

The fifth-generation model will compete directly with the likes of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class, BMW 7 Series and Jaguar XJ.

The Japanese manufacturer has said little about the upcoming model, but it has confirmed that it will be based on “an extended version of Lexus’ new global architecture for luxury vehicles”.

This platform, known as GA-L, features rear-wheel drive and will also be used in the forthcoming LC coupe. According to Lexus, the platform allows the LS to provide a “more dynamic driving experience”.

Lexus has also said the new saloon will be offered with “visionary technology”, leading to speculation that semi-autonomous driving systems and more economical powertrains will feature when the car touches down in the UK.

The company has promised a bold new look, too, with a coupe-like silhouette. It is thought that much of the aesthetic will be lifted from the new LC coupe, which uses the brand’s latest design language.

Pricing is yet to be confirmed, but it is thought that we could see an increase on the existing £99,995 asking price for the range-topping LS 600h hybrid.
