Tesla has announced a new top-of-the-range Model S called the P100D, which will be the third-fastest-accelerating production car ever thanks to its optional Ludicrous mode.

Sprinting from 0-62mph in 2.5 seconds, the new Model S derivative is only out-accelerated by the Porsche 918 Spyder and LaFerrari. P100Ds without Ludicrous mode, meanwhile, will be capable of up to 381 miles on one charge, which would make it the world’s longest-range electric car.

The Model X will also be offered with the new 100kWh battery, but because the seven-seat SUV is a larger car than the Model S, its 0-62mph time is extended to 2.9 seconds when Ludicrous mode is fitted, while the range is cut to 337 miles.

P90D owners based in the US will be able to upgrade their cars’ battery to P100D spec for $20,000 (about £15,125), while customers who have not yet received their vehicles, meanwhile, will only be charged $10,000 (around £7,560) to upgrade the battery.

In the UK, Tesla has not confirmed pricing, but the company has said that the P100D is “obviously an expensive vehicle”, and that Model X and Model S sales are funding the development of the forthcoming Model 3 compact saloon.

The California-based firm said: “While the P100D Ludicrous is obviously an expensive vehicle, we want to emphasise that every sale helps pay for the smaller and much more affordable Tesla Model 3 that is in development.”
