McLaren to replace 650S with new Super Series in March

McLaren will reveal a replacement for the 650S at the Geneva Motor Show in March.

The newcomer, which will mark the first of the second generation of high-powered ‘Super Series’ models.

Under the skin, the as-yet-unnamed supercar will use a carbon-fibre structure called the Monocage II. Lighter than the structure used in the 650S, the new Monocage II construction allows McLaren to make the newcomer 18kg lighter than the 650S, at 1,283kg. According to McLaren, that makes the second-generation Super Series car the lightest in its class.

The Monocage II’s advantages aren’t limited to weight reduction, though. The new frame allows for larger door apertures and narrower door sills, as well as a lower centre of gravity that improves the car’s handling.

There is no official word on what the new Super Series will be powered by, but it is thought that some variation on the 3.8-litre V8 seen in the in the 650S will sit behind the driver.

“Super Series is the core of the McLaren business and personifies the blend of extreme performance, crafted luxury and unparalleled driver involvement that is the McLaren heartland,” said McLaren Automotive’s CEO, Mike Flewitt.

“This is the first time we have replaced a product family and the new Super Series will be absolutely true to McLaren’s pioneering spirit in being a revolutionary leap forwards, both for our brand and the supercar segment.”
