Mercedes unveil X-Class Concept

Mercedes-Benz has taken the wraps of its Concept X-Class, giving consumers a look at what its X-Class pickup could look like when it reaches production.

The X-Class will come as the first pickup for the German manufacturer, with Mercedes aiming to provide the premium alternative to other pickups in the segment.

Two designs were revealed, the Concept X-Class Powerful Adventurer, and the Concept X-Class Stylish Explorer.

The Powerful Adventurer is designed to showcase the X-Class’ capability, as well as the traditional values such as toughness and off-road prowess that are usually associated with a pickup.

In contrast, the Stylish Explorer shows a side to the car that isn’t usually thought of when using a pickup. It will be a stylish and comfortable alternative to the rest of the market, as well as offering more space.

The X-Class is due to enter production in late 2017, with Argentina, Brazil, South Africa, Australia and Europe all seen as key markets.

Dieter Zetsche, chairman of the board of Daimler AG and head of Mercedes-Benz Cars, said: “With the Mercedes-Benz pickup, we will close one of the last gaps in our portfolio

“We want to offer customers vehicles matching their specific needs. The X-Class will set new standards in a growing segment.”

Volker Mornhinweg, head of Mercedes-Benz Vans, said: “We will open up and change the segment of mid-size pickups – with the world’s first true premium pickup for the modern urban lifestyle.

“Our future X-Class will be a pickup that knows no compromise. Ladder-type frame, high-torque six-cylinder engine, and permanent all-wheel drive are compulsory for us.”
