Mercedes unveils new AMG GT Roadster

Mercedes has revealed the new soft-top AMG GT Roadster, which is set to arrive in the UK next year.

Two variants will be offered: the standard Roadster and the more powerful C model, which uses technology first seen on the AMG GT R unveiled earlier this year.

Both versions use the same 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 as the coupe, but the C model ups the power output from 469bhp to 550bhp. The result is a 0-62mph time of 3.7 seconds and a 196mph top speed.

Even the standard Roadster is no slouch matching the coupe’s four-second 0-62mph sprint and topping out at 186mph.

But there’s more to the C model than raw power. A rear-axle steering system allows the back wheels to help the front wheels turn the car, and there’s an electronic rear differential designed to improve handling.

The C gets a wider rear track, too, and a bespoke suspension system with adaptive and adjustable dampers, as opposed to the normal Roadster’s sports set-up.

Finally, the C is topped off by an AMG high-performance exhaust and an additional transmission mode. This ‘Race’ setting allows super-fast gear changes and works with the exhaust to provide a more exciting soundtrack.

As yet, Mercedes has been coy about pricing, but considering the coupe’s £98,000 asking price, the Roadster is likely to cost a significant amount more than £100,000.
