Polestar transformed into standalone performance car brand

Volvo’s performance division Polestar has become a separate company that will build electrified models.

The Swedish carmaker first introduced its performance division as an extension of its Polestar Racing team in 2012, with race engineers helping to increase the performance of Volvo’s road cars.

However, Polestar will now be a separate company that will produce electrified high-performance versions of Volvo road cars that will use Polestar badges. The companies will share technologies, engineering knowledge and facilities in a similar way to BMW’s established M Division.

Thomas Ingenlath, Volvo’s former senior vice-president of design, will now be Polestar CEO. He said: “I am really excited to take up the challenge of establishing this exciting brand, developing a fabulous portfolio of bespoke products and channelling the passion we have throughout the Polestar team. The next chapter in Polestar’s history is just beginning.”

The company’s plans are still under wraps and will be revealed later this year, but it is clear that they will focus on high-performance hybrid models. Volvo currently has a ‘twin-engine’ hybrid powertrain in its line-up that will likely form the base of Polestar’s enhancements.
