Ravishing and roofless: McLaren’s 570S Spider revealed

McLaren’s new 570S Spider has been unveiled.

The Spider is the third variation of the 570, following the coupe and GT. As is routine with McLaren’s road cars, the Spider features the 3.8-litre twin-turbo v8 developed by the Woking-based manufacturer.

The power of the Spider is unchanged from the coupe at 562bhp, as is the top speed of 204mph when the roof is up; it is reduced to 196mph with the roof down.

Rear buttresses have been added to accommodate the roof mechanism used in the 650S and 675LT convertibles.

Convertibles tend to suffer a much heavier curb weight than their hard top cousins due to the strengthening required to retain chassis rigidity. McLaren’s lightweight carbon-fibre cell combats this issue, and as such, just 48kg has been added to the Spider compared to the Coupe.

Mike Flewitt, chief executive at McLaren Automotive, said: “The McLaren 570S Spider is the most attainable McLaren Spider to date and adds yet another dimension to the McLaren Sports Series family.

“This is a convertible without compromise; its mid-engined layout and carbon-fibre MonoCell II chassis guarantee the same thrilling dynamic performance and exceptional driver involvement enjoyed in a 570S Coupe, but with the added attraction of a retractable hard-top that delivers the extra exhilaration of roof-down motoring.”

Prices for the McLaren 570S Spider start at £164,750, and the ordering process has already commenced.
