Renault pours cold water on hot Twingo RS

Renault says it will not build a faster Renault Sport RS version of its Twingo city car.

Speaking in Paris as the French brand launched the new Twingo GT, Matthieu Mettivier, a chief engineer at Renault Sport, said the city car was not big enough to take a larger and more powerful engine.

Ever since the Twingo was launched, there has been speculation that the brand would build a go-faster variant, with media suggesting that the car’s rear-wheel-drive, rear-engined was ideal for a hot hatch.

However, Renault has quelled any speculation that the Twingo will be used as a platform for a souped-up city car. Apparently, the engine bay, which is under the boot floor, cannot accommodate anything larger than the 0.9-litre, three-cylinder engine that powers the Twingo’s flagship GT model.

“There will be no RS because in the Twingo there is not enough space for a big engine,” Mettivier said.

This is the second blow in just a couple of weeks for fans of fast Renaults, after the Clio RS 16 project was ignominiously canned.

The 271bhp hot hatch was displayed at the Monaco Grand Prix earlier this year to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Renault Sport, but the French brand recently confirmed that the project has been discontinued.

That decision was taken because there is insufficient production space in the Dieppe factory, where the Renault engineers will soon begin production of the new Alpine sports car.
