Renault Zoe EV gains a new battery for increased range

Renault has unveiled a new battery for its all-electric Zoe that will allow the supermini to travel up to 250 miles on a single charge.

Called the Z.E. 40, this new battery has a capacity of 41kWh, which is close to double that of the old 22kWh unit. While its capacity has been greatly improved, the dimensions of the battery have not increased, nor has the time taken to fully charge it.

Renault said that the extended range gives the Zoe “the longest range of any mainstream electric vehicle”.

With a range of 250 miles, the Zoe can travel further than its key rivals – the Nissan Leaf and the BMW i3 – which can cover 155 miles and 195 miles respectively.

In addition to improved range, the Z.E. 40 battery utilises a new air circulation system that helps maintain the battery’s temperature in a range of different weather conditions. The French manufacturer says this makes the car “economical to run in very hot or very cold weather”.

Renault’s chairman and CEO, Carlos Ghosn, said: “This month Renault surpassed 100,000 electric vehicles sold and now Zoe will travel up to 250 miles without recharging. We are continuing to push in areas where innovation matters most for Renault customers, making it easy for them to choose electric.”

Eric Feunteun, the manufacturer’s vice-president for electric vehicles, commented: “It’s a breakthrough in all-electric motoring that will provide the range needed to make any motorist comfortable choosing electric.”
