Revised Maserati GranTurismo scheduled for 2018

Maserati will update its popular GranTurismo GT model in 2018, the company’s region manager for northern Europe has said.

Speaking at the UK launch of the Italian manufacturer’s new Levante SUV, Peter Denton said the new GranTurismo would be launched in two years, alongside an updated version of the GranCabrio – the GranTurismo’s convertible stablemate.

Denton revealed little as he spoke to the media, although many have speculated that the new car will be built along similar lines as the current model.

This means a Ferrari-derived V8 may power the car, which could potentially be sourced from the 488 GTB’s 3.9-litre turbocharged unit. This would likely be positioned at the front of the car, and drive the rear wheels.

That said, though, it seems unlikely that the Maserati will share much more than this with its Ferrari cousins. The recently-released Maserati Levante didn’t use any running gear from sister brand Jeep, despite the American manufacturer’s 4x4 roots.

Denton also said that Maserati is working towards building a production version of the Alfieri concept that was displayed at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show.

While this 2+2 GT shares a similar nature with the GranTurismo, the two models will sit alongside one another from 2019.
