Seat turns to public to name new SUV

Seat has entrusted the public with the task of naming their upcoming SUV.

Following the Spanish manufacturer’s announcement of the new model – which will sit above the Ateca in its line-up – in March, the firm had already received a number of name suggestions via social media. In response to this, Seat has launched a public naming project for the new model, dubbed #SEATseekingname.

Seat has provided one main criterion for the project - any proposals submitted must be taken from Spanish geography. This is an effort to prevent issues akin to the infamous ‘RSS Boaty McBoatface’ controversy faced by the Natural Environment Research Council’s public naming of a polar research ship.

Seat president Luca de Meo explained: “Seat has decided to call upon every fan of the brand to propose and later vote on the name of the new SUV which is set to make history.

“In our efforts to launch #SEATseekingname, we have redefined the typical process in order to engage the public and followers of the brand all over the world in the project from start to finish.”

The campaign has now been officially launched, and people from all over the world have until June 22 to submit their proposal through the seat.com/seekingname website.

A shortlist of suggestions will be tested in various markets, before the final three are formally announced at the Frankfurt Motor Show on September 12. The public will then be involved for a second time, choosing between the finalists before September 25, with the winning name set for reveal on October 15.

Seat’s new SUV will arrive in dealerships next year.
