SsangYong concept to preview next-generation Rexton in Paris

SsangYong is due to preview its next-generation Rexton SUV at the upcoming Paris Motor Show.

Although many concepts that appear during motor shows are vastly different from the production cars they inspire, Paul Williams, SsangYong’s UK CEO, said that the vehicle revealed at the French show will be “very close” in design to the finished article.

The new Rexton is due to arrive in the UK in September 2017, coming in front of three other new models to be introduced between 2018 and 2021.

These latest sketches give a clear indication about the looks of the new vehicle, with a narrower grille – inspired by the current Tivoli – sitting at the front of the car. There’s a much lower roofline than the outgoing car, too.

However, despite the sleek looks SssangYong say that the new Rexton is 10cm longer than the current car, and will also be slightly wider and taller. This should give better interior and boot space.

The South Korean company are also claiming that the next car will be lighter than the one it replaces, which currently weighs in at 2.1 tonnes. This, combined with improvements to the current 2.2-litre diesel engine, should mean that the new Rexton will return better economy and emissions figures.

The interior will also be updated, with a large 10.2-inch touchscreen giving drivers control of all major infotainment controls.

Williams said: “When we brought out Tivoli we were impressed by the interior. When people see the new Rexton it’ll demonstrate that we’ve moved on even further.”
