SsangYong reveals new SUV will keep Rexton name

SsangYong has revealed that its updated, more premium 4×4 will retain the Rexton when it hits dealer forecourts later this year.

The South Korean manufacturer’s large SUV was developed under the codename Y400 and was previewed at last year’s Paris Motor Show as the LIV-2 concept. And while it promises to be more upmarket than ever thanks to an upgraded interior with leather upholstery and Apple CarPlay, the brand decided to keep the Rexton moniker.

The model will come with both rear- and four-wheel drive, with SsangYong keen to state that despite its upmarket appeal it won’t lose the off-road ability the brand is known for.

SsangYong is best known for offering low-cost vehicles such as the Tivoli crossover and Musso pick-up truck, but it hopes the new Rexton will draw a new audience.

While the SsangYong badge is unfamiliar to many British car buyers, the Asian manufacturer is slowly but surely gaining a foothold in the UK car market.

In 2015 it doubled sales compared with the previous year thanks to the introduction of the Tivoli crossover. Last year saw sales increase by a further 36 per cent – it now has a 0.17 per cent market share, up from 0.13 in 2015.

And after adding three new dealers to its network this year, SsangYong now has 60 forecourts across the UK.
