Japanese manufacturer Subaru has teased a souped-up version of its BRZ sports coupe.

The STI name is synonymous with more dynamic versions of Subaru models, and with the BRZ – which shares its platform with the Toyota GT86 – you can expect a much more aggressive version.

Subaru USA tweeted an image of a large carbon-fibre rear spoiler with the caption: “Stay tuned… 6/8/17. #STI”, meaning the first real look we’ll get is on June 6.

Little is known about this new model, but with the current car producing 197bhp from a 2.0-litre boxer engine, you can expect the performance to be significantly enhanced with the STI upgrade.

As the BRZ shares the engine and chassis with the Toyota model – which is practically identical – it could be the start of a change of heart from both companies, who’d previously said that neither the GT86 or the BRZ needed a boost in performance. That’s despite many calls from the motoring community for it to be more aggressive.

With the companies working so closely together on this project, it is likely that if this is to be a BRZ STI that a souped-up GT86 will soon follow.

Neil Spires, Toyota’s product manager, was asked by the Press Association whether a faster GT86 is in the pipeline. He said: “Let’s hope so. I’d be really disappointed if we don’t see Gazoo Racing [Toyota’s racing division] not only on our sports cars, but also on our core models. Why do it, otherwise?”

STI stands for Subaru Tecnica International and is the high-performance tuning and motorsport division that has been part of Subaru since 1988.
