Subaru WRX STI Type RA NBR Special sets new Nurburgring lap record

A heavily-modified version of Subaru’s WRX STI has become the fastest four-door saloon to ever lap the Nurburgring.

Subaru posted a time of 6m 57.5s in its WRX STI Type RA NBR Special, which has also set record lap times on the Isle of Man TT course and was the third-fastest car up the hill climb at this year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed.

Although the car is based on the Subaru WRX STI, the Type RA NBR Special bears little resemblance to the production version you would find in dealerships.

Racing specialists Prodrive worked on the car, equipping it with a World Rally Championship-specification version of the WRX’s regular 2.0-litre Boxer engine, developing around 600bhp for a top speed of 179mph.

Continuing the list of modifications are nine-inch-wide slick tyres for optimal grip, as well as a WRC gearbox that can complete shifts in 20 milliseconds.

A high-downforce aerodynamics package has been fitted to the car’s exterior, which helps the Subaru stick to the road at high speeds.
