A large majority of Britons find car journeys a great opportunity to spend quality time with loved ones, a recent survey has revealed.

Quoting figures obtained from YouGov, the Hertz Quality Time Report showed that 62 per cent of the 2,185 adults surveyed enjoyed spending time with friends and family while travelling in the car.

The poll also found that conversations concerning work and children were the most popular subjects to talk about while driving – both making up 34 per cent of in-car discussions.

Surprisingly, people’s romantic lives was also a popular talking point, with 16 per cent of respondents saying they had received or given dating advice while in the car with friends or family.

An additional 13 per cent claimed to use road trips as an opportunity to bring up significant events such as getting a new pet or going on holiday.

Music preference – which is often a cause of conflict on car journeys – was also revealed in the survey. Pop was the genre of choice for 29 per cent of people, while 16 per cent claimed to prefer rock and indie music. A mere one per cent said they liked to listen to hip-hop while behind the wheel.

David Rowland, general manager of Hertz International, said: “Despite our lives being overrun with digital distractions like social media, tablets and smartphones, we’ve found that a huge number of people in the UK still enjoy spending quality time with friends and family in the car.

“Long journeys in the car are a great opportunity to catch up on people’s lives.”
