Toyota reveals high-performance Yaris

Toyota is due to reveal a high-performance version of its popular Yaris supermini at the Geneva Motor Show.

Taking inspiration from the new Yaris WRC rally car, which is set to make its debut at next week’s Monte Carlo rally, the new ‘hot’ Yaris will feature a bold rear spoiler, central exhaust outlet and large front grille.

Toyota’s studio images of the car show black and red decals on the front and sides of the car, though whether these will feature on production models is as yet unclear.

The Japanese car maker is yet to confirm what will go under the bonnet of the small hatch, but it has been confirmed that the engine will produce “more than 210bhp”.

Not only is Toyota producing this high-performance model, but it will also be making changes to the standard Yaris line-up, too. This will see the car given design modification both inside and out, as well as a more up-to-date interior. The car maker says that the Yaris will get a series of technical changes in an attempt to improve the supermini’s handling and comfort.

Exactly what these changes entail remains unclear, but Toyota claims that they will “strengthen the Yaris’s appeal, in particular the hybrid version”. This suggests that the current petrol-electric model may get an update to its powertrain.

The Geneva Motor Show opens to the public on March 9 following two press preview days.
