A survey of 1,000 people has found that parents in Britain will spend £140 million on keeping their children entertained during long car journeys this summer.

The research, which was gathered by Skoda, aimed to find out what lengths parents went to in order to maintain the peace in the back seat.

With families spending £42 on average per trip, keeping the little ones quiet is a costly business. Money is used on gadgets, games as well as food and drink.

Nearly a third of those in the survey admitted that they dreaded taking their children on long journeys, with many spending at least the equivalent to a tank of fuel on making sure that they were entertained.

Despite this amount, the phrase ‘are we there yet?’ will be heard over 3 million times in cars travelling during the summer period.

Not only this, but the cry of ‘I need the toilet’ will come out around 2 million times, while the dreaded ‘I feel sick’ will feature 1.6 million times.

While many children are kept amused by modern technology, a surprising amount still play traditional games that have been heard in many cars throughout the years.

Some 53 percent of people use I-spy as the perfect boredom deterrent, while 19 per cent favour hangman. The registration plate game is still very much in play, with 16 per cent playing it while travelling.

It comes after research found that 5.3 million parents will be loading cars up and taking trips across the UK.
