Vauxhall reveals the 256bhp Insignia GSi

Vauxhall has unveiled the Insignia GSi, the range-topping performance model of their family car.

The GSI boasts 252bhp and replaces the range-topping VXR, although it’s likely an even hotter model is in the pipeline.

Available exclusively with a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine, the new car is paired withnall-wheel-drive and an eight-speed automatic transmission.

Despite having less power than the VXR, Vauxhall says the GSi can actually go faster around the infamous Nurburgring circuit, as it is lighter, has a lower centre of gravity and provides more traction.

The manufacturer says it has developed an all-new chassis for the GSi, supported by shorter springs and new, sportier shock absorbers that are said to reduce body movement “significantly”. Four-pot Brembo brakes upfront should also equate to better stopping power.

Buyers can choose between the standard 18-inch alloy wheels and optional 20-inch wheels. Both come wrapped in sticky Michelin Pilot Sport 4 S tyres.

Sporty exterior tweaks include a subtle rear spoiler and two chrome-edged exhaust pipes. The interior also benefits from optional sport seats than can be specified with two different leather combinations, and come with ventilation, heating, massage and adjustable side bolsters.

The Vauxhall Insignia GSi will be publicly unveiled at the 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show in September – prices are likely to be confirmed at the event.
