Volkswagen add new engine and new GTI performance to its Golf line up

Volkswagen has announced that a new 1.5-litre TSI EVO engine is to join its current Golf line up, and a GTI variant with more power is now available too.

The new 1.5-litre unit is available with 148bhp, although a 128bhp version will join the engine range later on in the year.

It is also more economical too averaging 55.4mpg or 56.5mpg when fitted with a DSG dual-clutch gearbox.

It also emits 114 g/km of CO2. Official economy figures for the less powerful model are yet to be released.

The new Golf GTI Performance will come with 242bhp- a 15bhp increase over the old model.

It can travel from 0-60mph in six seconds and has a top speed of 154mph. It is available with either a six-speed manual gearbox or seven-speed automatic.

As standard all Golfs now come with an eight-inch TFT infotainment screen, although for the GTI performance that is upgraded to a 12.3-inch version.

Other features include an electronic handbrake, automatic post-collision braking and a driver alert function. LED daytime running lights are also standard.

The Golf’s practicality remains the same with more than 380-litres of boot space on the five-door hatchback– enough for a weekly shop or a couple of suitcases.

Folding the seats down increases capacity to 1,270-litres, handy for a trip to the local DIY store.

Prices for the 1.5-litre TSI EVO Golf start at £23,445, while the GTI Performance costs from £29,280.
