Volkswagen reveal powerful new Tiguan

Volkswagen has introduced a high-powered version of its popular Tiguan mid-size SUV.

With a 2.0-litre twin-turbocharged diesel engine under the bonnet, the Tiguan BiTDI produces more power than the current Golf GTI. It’s also just as fast – capable of reaching 62mph in just 6.5 seconds, and hitting a top speed of 142mph.

However, its performance doesn’t mean the Tiguan returns disappointing economy figures. Far from it, emissions lie at a reasonable 167g/km and it should bring a claimed 44.1mpg.

Only one transmission is available – a seven-speed automatic sending power to all four wheels. This, along with the high-powered engine, is only available on top-end SEL and R-Line trims.

Prices start at £36,450 for the SEL model, with this coming as standard with satellite navigation, adaptive cruise control and a 12.3-inch screen replacing the car’s conventional binnacle displays.

The R-Line grade brings with it additional styling tweaks, as well as 20-inch wheels and microfibre seat upholstery. However, it also adds a premium, with the R-Line commanding a £38,640 price.

As well as the standout bi-turbo diesel, Volkswagen has also added a 2.0-litre petrol engine, producing 177bhp and powering all four wheels. Automatic transmission is optional on this model, however.

When using the standard manual gearbox, this variant will return 39.8mpg and emit 170g/km CO2. It’ll also reach 62mph in 7.7 seconds.

When fitted with an automatic gearbox acceleration remains unaffected, though fuel economy does take a slight hit – falling to 38.2mpg.
