Volkswagen has revealed an updated version of its successful Golf hatchback, debuting an all-new engine at the same time.

That new powerplant is a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol unit, which produces 147bhp and incorporates Active Cylinder Management which aids economy on longer journeys. There’s also another unit of the same size which puts out 128bhp, with this engine featuring in the ultra-efficient BlueMotion model.

The famous Golf GTI has also received an update, now producing 227bhp as standard or 241bhp in GTI Performance cars.

The range-topping Golf R has been updated too, now sending 205bhp to all four wheels thanks to a 2.0-litre turbocharged engine.

Alison Jones, director of Volkswagen in the UK, said: ““The arrival of a new or updated Golf is always a special occasion but, in 2017, the debut of this car with its semi-autonomous operation; revised styling; new engines and exceptional new infotainment systems really does feel extra-special.

“The updated Golf will, I’m sure, retain its place at the head of the compact car class but, just as importantly, will strengthen its place in the hearts of countless UK owners thanks to its exceptional quality, classless appeal and, now more than ever, its hugely competitive pricing and whole-life value.”

The new Golf is available to order now, with prices starting at £17,625 for the entry level S 1.0-litre TSI model.
