Volvo offers Android Auto in 90-series cars

Volvo is introducing Android CarPlay on its luxurious 90-series vehicles, including the XC90 SUV and S90 saloon.

The software allows customers to pair the vehicle’s infotainment system with Android devices such as smartphones and tablet computers. It comes in addition to Apple’s CarPlay system which is already offered on 90 cars, and features as part of the £300 smartphone integration pack.

Owners using Android Auto in their Volvo cars will be able to use apps that feature on their phone while on the move, controlled through the car’s infotainment screen. These include Google Maps and Google Play Music. The system also allows the user to make and receive calls, and receive text messages.

Unlike other systems, Volvo’s portrait screen allows the Android Auto system to sit alongside the car’s other functions, rather than in its own separate menu.

The Smartphone package also includes a second USB socket which allows two additional devices to be connected and charged. Customers whose cars already feature Apple CarPlay are eligible for a free upgrade to Smartphone Integration, too.

Jon Wakefield, managing director of Volvo in the UK, said: “It’s more important than ever for our customers to stay connected while on the move. Our Apple CarPlay integration was already the best in the business, and the introduction of Android Auto brings our class-leading smartphone integration to a whole new audience.”
