VW pulls covers off hot new Up! GTI concept

Volkswagen has pulled the covers off its Up! GTI concept ahead of its public debut at the famed annual Golf GTI meet at Lake Wörthersee.

The Up! GTI concept is similar in power output to the original Mk1 Golf GTI that was released back in 1976, producing 113bhp. With a kerb weight of only 997kg, this will enable the Up! to complete the sprint from 0-60mph in around 8.6 seconds, before hitting a top speed of 122mph.

Marking the new concept aside from the regular Up! is distinctive GTI markings. These include the iconic red stripe across the radiator grille with its honeycomb pattern and GTI logo. Double stripes down the car’s lower flank also add to its sporting image.

Large 17-inch alloys have also been fitted, while the suspension has been lowered by 15mm. A roof edge spoiler also aids downforce over the rear axle for improved handling at higher speeds.

The cabin has been reimagined as well. Volkswagen has fitted a new leather-trimmed sport steering wheel, as well as a GTI gear knob. The seats have also been upholstered in the iconic ‘clark’ tartan pattern.

While the Up! GTI that will be on display at Wörthersee is just a concept, a full production version will be launched early next year.

The GTI Meet will run from May 24 to 27 at Lake Wörthersee in Austria.
