The Mitsubishi Lancer made its debut in Japan in 1973, remaining in production until 2017. The car was released all around the world, beginning with Europe in 1979.
Latterly, the Lancer was manufactured as both a four-door saloon and five-door family hatchback, with ostensibly four trims: GS1 to GS4. The vehicle benefits from sharp styling with a stand-out feature being its winged rear spoiler. The Lancer’s cabin is good-looking too, and well-equipped. Virtually all of the more recent models come with air conditioning and front and rear electric windows, making journeys as comfortable as possible. Also featured is an MP3-compatible CD player. The higher the grade, the more features are added, such as a pan-European satellite navigation system, complete with a hard-disc drive and a colour touchscreen.
Typically, the vehicle is fitted with one of two petrol engines (a 1.5-litre 108bhp or a 1.8-litre 142bhp unit) or a 2.0-litre 138bhp diesel engine. A rarer 237bhp-powered unit is a feature of Ralliart variants. Models installed with the 1.8-litre engine, paired with six-speed continuously variable transmission, are capable of 0-60mph in approximately 9.6 seconds. For similar acceleration but more torque, the 2.0-litre engine is a good bet, and is arguably the pick of the bunch.
As is often the case with Japanese cars, the Lancer has been noted for its reliability. In fact, in 2010, it was declared the most dependable car of the last decade or so by Warranty Direct.
