The original Pulsar made its debut in 1978 and remained in production for the following 27 years. The most recent iteration of this five-door hatchback was made available to UK markets in 2013 and is being manufactured to this day.
When purchased brand new, the smart-looking Pulsar was very affordable; this is even truer of pre-owned editions. The vehicle is very cheap to run too and comes with generous equipment levels. All models feature, for instance, four power-operated windows and air-conditioning. Steering wheel-mounted audio controls are also included, enabling safe and easy operation of the vehicle’s four-speaker sound system, which includes an MP3-compatible CD player, AM/FM radio and Bluetooth connectivity. The car’s 385-litre boot space can be expanded, when required, to provide a not inconsiderable 1,395 litres of cargo capacity.
Entry-level models are fitted with a 1.2-litre 115bhp petrol engine, which is paired with six-speed manual transmission. This delivers up to 56.5mpg and a 117g/km CO2 emission figure. Even greater fuel efficiency is provided by Pulsar variants installed with a 1.5-litre diesel unit, which returns as much as 78.5mpg and emissions as low as 94g/km. If you like your hatch to be a little hotter, look for versions that are powered by a 1.6-litre petrol engine. This produces 190bhp, 240Nm of torque and 0-60mph in less than eight seconds, while still managing up to 49.5mpg.
The Pulsar was awarded a five-star crash-test rating by Euro NCAP. The car features a range of safety features, including Anti-lock Braking System, Electronic Stability Control, six airbags and ISOFIX child-seat fixtures. Some models are additionally specified with safety tech such as Autonomous Emergency Braking, Lane-departure Warning and Blind-spot Detection.
