The Almera was produced by Nissan between 1995 and 2006 and was made available to UK customers in 2000. This compact, well-built and discreetly styled family car was competitively priced during its manufacturing run so is likely to represent a good bargain today.
The Almera was released as a three and five-door hatchback and, in 2001, a four-door saloon. This five-seat car features more than 20 storage cubby holes and a 355-litre boot space, which can be expanded further thanks to 60/40 split folding rear seats. Models built from 2003 onwards come with air conditioning as standard.
Expect to find one of three engines that were routinely installed within the Almera; two petrol units and one diesel option. A 1.5-litre 88bhp petrol engine is the most common. Attached to a five-speed manual gearbox, this delivers up to 42mpg and produces a 158g/km CO2 emissions figure. Some models are fitted with a 2.2-litre diesel engine, which delivers 134bhp and returns as much as 47mpg and 161g/km of CO2.
The Almera has a strong record for reliability: in Auto Express’ 2002 survey, it was ranked 18th out of 100. The following year, Which? declared that 98 percent of Almera models were free from breakdown.
